This is got to be the easiest and safest way to root your g1. No messing with the SPL required and thus no chance in fully bricking your phone. Also for the basic rom you don't need to format your card so I am not going to cover that here at all. This will get you rooted with a base root rom and if you want to try a different build or hero you can always switch out to different roms later. But like every other guide I, T-Mobile, and no-one else can be held liable if it goes wrong (IT WONT IF YOU FOLLOW STEPS) and the device is bricked. This is mainly new because one click has been patched with 1.6 android so you need to get back before that.

First you will make sure the card is formated as FAT32. I would recomend partitioning the card so you can do apps 2 sd and linux swap espeically if you want to run hero. You can go here Format tutorial and follow this guide for it or if not you can just continue as it is not required for this tutorial and can be done later. So you may want to backup card to computer first before continuing. Just copy everything to a folder on desktop. With card connected with access to computer in windows my computer right click and select type as fat32 and uncheck quick format and click start and wait till it is done.

Then you will need to go here (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8UBN4VC1) and download my root pack. All files needed are included so you don't need to download multiple files. Just unpack the zip file to your sd card. Make sure you don't put these in a folder you just want them on the sd card not in any folders. Now before you continue you will want to make sure you have a full or nearly full battery charge.

Once these files are on your memory card power down the phone and press and hold camera and power. This will allow you to go back to rc29. Give it a few minutes to read the dreaimg.nbh file for the restore. You should get a multi color screen and then a grey screen with some options press the power button to start update.

You should get a progress bar as it flashes back. Let that go thru. When done press on trackball.

You will get multi color screen. Press green call button, menu, and power to reboot. Let it come up to setup page but don't both to setup yet just power back off.

When off press and hold home and power. You should should get G1 and then triangle screen. Press alt and l to see log and then alt and s. You should see it extract and image. This step will update to 1.5 and newest radio in one step. when it is done it will prompt you to press home and back to reboot.

You will see arrow point to a chip for a while just let it do it. The phone should automatically reboot a few times. And will in a few minutes boot back up like it normally should.

Phone is now going to be on 1.5 firmware stock yet. When it comes backup and running go a head and sign in.

From main screen go to settings, application and put a check in for unknown sources and click ok.

Go to market and install "Oi File Manager" and open the program once installed. You should have a file there RecoveryFlasher.apk click and install that application and open.

In that app click "Backup Recovery Image" and wait untill it is done.

Click "Flash Cyanogen Recovery 1.4" Wait till that finishes.

Power off phone and press and hold home and power again.

You should now have a screen in green that you can scroll thru with trackball.

Click wipe data/factory reset

When done click "apply any zip from sd" and then click the "HTCofficial1.6.zip"

Wait till that finished and go back to apply any zip from sd and click "cm421.zip"

Wait till is finish again and click reboot it will restart a few times back to green screen just click reboot again and you will be running then the newest Cyanogen 4.2.1 build rooted fully other then SPL which you can now apply safely using the same update from zip otions just grab spl from here: Download SPL

Enjoy with easier root :-)
